“‘Please help my baby!’ a Vietnamese mother pleads with an interpreter aboard a U.S. Navy patrol boat in the delta. The patrol, seeking VC craft on the waterways, had stopped her sampan shortly after sunup—before the 7 a.m. curfew ended. Finding neither VC nor contraband, the sailors helped her sick child as much as they could from the vessel’s first-aid kit and moved on.” —From “Mekong: River of Terror and Hope,” December 1968, National Geographic magazine
